本日、2曲入りのクリスマス・シングル「Noël」をSacred Bonesからリリース。これはBandcampでの独占販売となります。このシングルには、ロンドン在住のSSW、Lauren Auderとフランス人プロデューサーDvianceにより新構築された「Pardon?」（Borisの2011年のアルバム『New Album』より）と、BorisによるWham!のカヴァー「Last Chrismas」を収録。
今年リリース10周年を迎えた『New Album』、このアルバムに影響されたというLaurenとDviance二人との長きに渡る繋がりがここに実を結ぶ。
そしてこれは、COVID-19による様々な制約の中で生活している世界中の皆さんへのクリスマス・プレゼント。今年のクリスマスがCOVID-19下での “ラスト・クリスマス “になることを願っています。

Today Boris have shared a two-track Christmas single entitled ‘Noël’, released via Sacred Bones and available exclusively through Bandcamp. The release includes a striking rework of Boris track “Pardon?” by Lauren Auder and Dviance, as well as Boris’ take on the Wham! festive classic, “Last Christmas”.

Boris’ ‘New Album’ celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and ‘Noël’ sees the delicate crescendo of “Pardon?” given an ethereal, airy rework by London-based singer-songwriter Lauren Auder and French producer Dviance. Auder’s haunting vocals tie with crisp beats and layered strings to create a rich and elegant take on the original track.

This is a Christmas present for everyone who lives with the various restrictions stemming from COVID-19. Here in Japan, it is customary to give gifts at Christmas. We hope this Christmas will be the “Last Christmas” of COVID-19.

2022年、結成30周年を迎えるBoris。30周年記念アルバム第一弾としてアルバム『W』を1月21日にKiliKiliVllaからリリース。

In an effort to sublimate the negative energy surrounding everyone in 2020, legendary Japanese heavy rock band Boris focused all of their energy creatively and turned out the most extreme album of their long and widely celebrated career, “NO.” The band self-released the album, desiring to get it out as quickly as possible but intentionally called the final track on the album “Interlude” while planning its follow-up.

The follow-up comes with “W”, the band’s debut album for Sacred Bones Records. The record opens with the same melody as “Interlude” in a piece titled “I want to go to the side where you can touch…” and in contrast to the extreme sounds found on “NO”, this new album whispers into the listener’s ear with a trembling hazy sound meant to awaken sensation.

On all of “W” Wata carries the lead vocal duties. In general the styles on the album range from noise to ambient, as is typical with one of our generation’s most dynamic and adventurous bands, but there is a thread of melodic deliberation through each song that successfully accomplishes the band’s goal of eliciting deep sensation. Be it through epic sludgey riffs, angelic vocal reverberations or the seduction of their off-kilter percussion, Boris will have you fully under their spell. This languid and liquifying sound is perfectly represented in the beautiful Kotao Tomozawa cover art and in suGar yoshinaga’s sound production.

“NO” and “W” weave together to form NOW, a duo of releases that respond to one another. In following their hardest album with this sensuous thundering masterpiece they are creating a continuous circle of harshness and healing, one that seems more relevant now than ever and shows the band operating at an apex of their musical career.

 

2020年、世界はコロナ禍に突入。各国の都市はロックダウンされ、人々の生活と意識をネガティブなエネルギーが覆っていった。
そのような状況下、世界中のアーティストが「アーティストとして何をすべきか、何ができるのか」という自問自答を重ねていた。
そしてBorisがとった選択は「作り続けること」だった。

世界に蔓延するネガティブなエネルギーを昇華させるべく、彼らは自身のキャリアに於いて最もエクストリームでハードなアルバムと評された『NO』の制作に取り掛かる。
何者の枷もない完全DIYのもと、自分達の最速のスピードで作品を作り上げ、2020年７月に“轟音のヒーリングミュージック“として世界へと放った。

この『NO』の最終曲“Interlude”はそのタイトルの通り次章へ向かうという意味を含んでいる。そして“Interlude”と同じメロディをもつ“I want to go to the side where you can touch…” からスタートする次章＝最新アルバムの名は『W』。
今ここに『NO』と『W』両作は“NOW”という言葉として繋がり、互いに呼応し合う作品となる。

実際『W』のレコーディングは『NO』から連続した時間と速度で行われ、2020年6月には完了、文字通り連作であると言える。
今作品ではWataが全てのメインヴォーカルを担当。エクストリームなサウンドスケープの前作とは対照的な、耳元でささやかれる歌とかすかな音の揺らぎによって聴く者の感覚を覚醒させる。『NO』による轟音の癒しと、『W』のささやきによる覚醒、この2つが円環で繋がる。

サウンドプロデュースはBuffalo DaughterのsuGar yoshinagaが担当。ゲストプレーヤーには日本を代表するBassistのTOKIEを迎え、アルバムジャケットには気鋭のオイルペインターKotao Tomozawaを起用するなど、コロナ禍以前～以後にわたる様々な出会い、必然的な繋がりが実を結んだ作品となっている。

『W』はモノクロームと化したこの世界へ、優しき彩りを様々な角度から射し入れる。そして円環は未来へと回り、進んでゆく。

The third installment of the Boris Season 3 Archive on Bandcamp comes with 3 releases related to our 25th anniversary in 2017-18.
“Secrets” was an album compiled of previously unreleased recordings, distributed at the final show of our 25th anniversary tour. “DEAR Extra“ was added as a bonus tracks only to the Japanese release of our album “DEAR”. “Japanese Heavy Rock Hits Live -25th Anniversary Show-“ is a completely unreleased multi-track recording taken during our 2018 US tour, featuring a “25th anniversary set” focusing on songs representative of Boris. Each of these releases helps to supplement the time and sound history that Boris has accumulated thus far.
Next year in 2022 we greet our 30th anniversary as a band, but for now as “preparation” we’d like you to listen to these albums. It is the first high-resolution digital release for each of these works.

“Secrets” is a special compilation commemorating our 25th band anniversary, distributed to the audience at the final show of our 25th Anniversary World Tour held at Shindaita Fever in Tokyo.
This was as a new album from a standpoint of taking excerpts from a huge collection of unreleased compositions that had been brewing over a long period of time through our accumulated activity, newly constructing them via technique and interpretation of “now”, thus inviting the listener to the next phase. Fragments of unreleased compositions were excessively weaved together, making for an album that can be listened to much like treasure hunting or solving a riddle. The accumulation of concealed time and sound over 25 years of Boris supplements our history in the foreground.
We’d be pleased if you would attempt to unravel the “secrets” of these 4 chapters over 44 minutes. This is the first high-resolution digital release.

“Secrets”は25周年を記念して特別編集され、2018年9月22日新代田Feverで行われた25th Anniversary World Tourファイナルのワンマンライブで配布された作品だ。
長きに亘る活動で蓄積、醸造された膨大な未発表音源から抜粋された楽曲を、”今”の解釈と手法によって新たに構築し、
次のフェイズへとリスナーを誘う新作アルバムという位置付けだった。
未発表曲の断片が過度に編み込まれ、宝探しあるいは謎解きのように聴けるアルバム。
25年に及ぶBorisの隠されていた時間と音の集積が、表側の歴史を補完する。
この4章、44分の”秘密”を解き明かしてもらえたら。

“Japanese Heavy Rock Hits Live -25th Anniversary Show-” FAS-057
After releasing our album “DEAR” in 2017, in August of the same year we left on our biggest yet world tour for our 25th anniversary. From the spring of 2018 we took this further with special “Boris 25th Anniversary” shows. April 2018 was our collaboration show with Stephen O’Malley at the Roadburn Festival, and in July we were joined by Merzbow at the Roskilde Festival (this being the first overseas performance as Boris with Merzbow).
In August we held a US tour in which we presented a special “25th Anniversary Set” focusing on our most representative “hit” songs, including longer pieces such as “feedbacker” and “flood”. This release, “Japanese Heavy Rock Hits Live”, is a multi-track recording from this tour. The atmosphere was full of deep emotion and gratification from going through layers of time with the audience, which you can probably get a sense of from the performance as well as from the audience reaction from beginning to end. And now in 2022, Boris will greet our 30th anniversary as a band. As “preparation,” we’d like you to listen to this new live album released to the world for the first time.
This is the first high-resolution digital release.

2017年アルバム『DEAR』をリリース後、同年8月から25周年期間として過去最大規模のワールドツアーを行なう。
2018年の春からは”Boris 25th Anniversary”として更にスペシャルなショウを展開した。
2018年4月、Roadburn FestivalにStephen O’Malleyとのコラボレーション編成で出演、7月にはMerzbowと共にRoskilde Festivalに出演（これはBoris with Merzbowとして初の海外公演）。
8月には長尺ナンバーの「feedbacker」「flood」を含む代表曲を中心とした”25周年セット”を披露するアメリカツアーを行った。今回リリースの”Japanese Heavy Rock Hits Live”はこのツアーの際にマルチトラックレコーディングされたもの。オーディエンスと共に年月を重ねた、その感慨と喜びに満ちた空気感は、演奏と終始聴こえる歓声からも伝わるだろう。

“DEAR Extra” FAS-058
Boris’s 25th anniversary album “DEAR” was released concurrently around the world in 2017. The album held a concept of being “music to hand over directly to each listener” with original plans for a triple vinyl release. However, in order to further define the concept of the album, some substantial songs were cut and released as “DEAR Extra“ which served as a bonus tracks that came only with the Japanese release, though these songs were originally planned and recorded for the main album.
As such, these songs were often performed live as part of the “DEAR” setlist, and they resound on the same level ground as the DEAR canon, and should not be considered non-canonical. With these 3 tracks integrated, you can feel the original destination and expansion of “DEAR”. This is the first worldwide release of these tracks.

結成25周年を迎えた2017年、アルバム『DEAR』を全世界同時リリースした。 “リスナーひとりひとりに直接手渡す出会いの音楽”をテーマとしたこのアルバムは、当初アナログ3枚組みにするプランだったが、コンセプトをより明確にする為、大幅に曲をカットした形でのリリースとなった。 今作”DEAR Extra”は当時日本盤にのみボーナストラックとして付けられたものだが、元々これらの曲は”本編”に収録される予定だった。
実際当時のライブでも『DEAR』のセットに組み込まれプレイしており、外典という位置付けではなく、正典と同じ地平に響く楽曲。 この3曲を統合することによって、『DEAR』本来の到達点・拡張性を感じてもらえるだろう。 今回が初の全世界リリースとなる。

The third installment of the Season 3 Boris Bandcamp archive comes with a live release, Boris performing “flood”. Originally released in 2013 on our own label, Fangsanalsatan, it was a limited edition release only available at live shows and through mail order, now sold out. The live recording is of our expanded performance of only one song, “flood”, just as it was performed at Daikanyama Unit in Tokyo on November 3, 2012. This Bandcamp release marks the first time the recording is available digitally.

After a lengthy world tour in 2009, we were playing festivals and planning special shows, at the same time pushing forward with our studio work. Layers of experimental endeavors expanded the possibilities of the band. We released 3 albums in 2011, “New Album”, “Attention Please”, and “Heavy Rocks”. It was a period when the possibilities of what we considered heavy rock were instantly forged ahead. However, in March of that same year, the Great East Japan Earthquake brought about greater physical and mental damage than we could have imagined, even if not directly. It was a time during which the attitude and sense of values of many expressive people, ourselves included, were in question. Immediately following the earthquake disaster we started a long-term world tour we titled “Hope World Tour”. This was a journey raising questions to ourselves, a ceremony for departed souls and pilgrimage to a world we could no longer return to. We performed “flood” as one song only in a show on November 3, 2012, approaching the end of “Hope World Tour”. While recovery of the Great East Japan Earthquake was slow-going, we dedicated our live performance of “flood” as a requiem. This performance could be said to be the peak of support guitarist Michio Kurihara’s tenure with the band, and with no added edits or postproduction whatsoever, the direct line recording is released just as it was on the day of the show. It is a recording from the actual state of the band at the time, containing the ambience of the surrounding world as it was.

2009年の長期にわたるワールドツアー後、フェスティバルの出演やスペシャルなショウの企画、同時進行でスタジオワークに邁進し、実験的な試みを重ねバンドの可能性を拡張していた。2011年には『New Album』『Attention Please』『Heavy Rocks』と三枚のアルバムをリリースし、自分たちが想うヘヴィミュージックの可能性を一気に押し進めた時期であった。しかし同年3月に発生した東日本大震災がもたらした、直接的ではないにしろ肉体・精神へのダメージは想像以上に大きく、自分たちも含めた数多の表現者たちがその態度や価値観を問われた時期でもあった。自分たちは震災直後から”Hope World Tour”と銘打った長期ツアーをスタートさせた。それは自身への問いを重ねる旅、もう戻らない世界への鎮魂と巡礼でもあった。”Hope World Tour”が終盤に差し掛かった2012年11月3日”flood”の一曲のみのライブを行なった。東日本大震災の復興がなかなか進まない状況の中、”flood”を鎮魂歌として捧げるという位置付けのライブだった。サポートギタリストのMichio Kurihara在籍期のピークとも言える演奏には、編集やポストプロダクションなどは一切加えず、当日のライン録音のまま作品化。当時の自分たちの姿勢と、取り巻いた世界の空気感がありのままに封じ込められた実況録音盤。

The second installment of the Season 3 Boris Bandcamp archive is 2 releases: “Golden Dance Classics +”, adding bonus tracks to the 2 Boris songs from the 2009 split release with 9dw, and also “Tokyo Wonder Land” a full live set recorded at Shibuya Club Quattro in Tokyo (a world-first release) that was an experimental show after finishing our world tour through over 100 locations around the world spanning 10 months from 2008 into 2009, as we headed into a new phase.

“Golden Dance Classics +”
In 2009 following our album “Smile” with a full schedule of touring and appearances at numerous festivals, we began working on “New Album 2009”, which was not intended to be released. This was a period of deep pursuit of an unexplored world of sound, with an engine made from what was processed on the road. Out of this period came numerous split releases, singles, and transitioned to our 3 albums released in 2011.
One of these splits was “Golden Dance Classics”, released by Catune. A rhythm machine of broken language in the background portrays an expressionless Tokyo, and a lonely enthusiasm reverberates in a non-beat fog. This was a landscape we hadn’t yet seen that emerged from a process of brewing in room temperature once we had returned to studio work after our longest tour. The bonus track “Tokyo Wonder Land” is a studio rehearsal take featuring guest guitarist Michio Kurihara, performing a live arrangement. “Akirame Flower” is a live take featuring GOTH-TRAD, who conducted both remix and recording as a low-end collaborator, amplifying the air vibrations of the venue to the utmost limits. In live shows in 2009 and after, these 2 songs took on an important role. We can clearly see the change and contrast after these newly-constructed studio compositions were given life on stage.

“Tokyo Wonder Land”
2008-2009 was a period in which we were engaged in a full schedule of long-term tours while simultaneously making progress at a quick pace on the development of a large number of releases. It was extremely natural that the critical amount of energy which was fully loaded at live shows turned into our genuine musical pursuit and proceeded beyond “heavy rock” in our studio works. The show included in this live release was held at the time we made “New Album 2009”, an “album solely for pure expression and confrontation, without being restricted to anything.” We hope you can feel these new songs as well as old songs built up on tours and at shows along with support guitarist Michio Kurihara, departing from their original sound and taking on a new shape. Looking back on it now, this show was perhaps a starting point for a style that evolves our songs by freely going back and forth between the experimental nature of our studio sessions and the physical nature of our live shows. This was also a conducting wire to our 3 simultaneous releases in 2011, “New Album”, “Heavy Rocks”, and “Attention Please”.

“Golden Dance Classics +”
2009年は、アルバム『Smile』リリース後の過密なツアーや数々のフェスへの出演を経て、リリースを前提としない『New Album 2009』の制作を行い、ロードにおける膨大なインプットを未開の音世界へのエンジンとして、探求を深めていった期間であった。それらは数々のスプリット作、シングル、2011年の三枚のアルバムへと繋がっていく。Catuneからリリースした『Golden Dance Classics』もその一つだった。片言なリズムマシンの背景に立つ無表情な東京と、ノンビートの霧もやの中で鳴り響く孤独な熱狂。それらは最長のツアーからスタジオワークの日常へ戻り、常温で醸造していく過程で浮かび上がってきた、今まで見たこともない風景だった。ボーナストラックである”トーキョーワンダーランド”のスタジオリハーサルテイクでは、サポートギタリストのMichio Kuriharaが参加し、ライブアレンジが施されている。”あきらめの花 -Akirame Flower-“の時を経たライブテイクでは、Low-Endコラボレーターとしてリミックスやレコーディングも共に行なって来たGOTH-TRADがフロアの空気振動を極限まで増幅させた。2009年以降のステージでは、この2曲がライブにおける重要な役割を担うことになった。本作ではスタジオワークで新構築された楽曲が、ステージ上で肉体性を獲得し体温を宿していく変遷と対比がはっきりとわかるだろう。

“Tokyo Wonder Land”
長期ツアーの過密スケジュールと同時進行で、ハイペースで膨大な量の作品を制作していた2008〜2009年。ライブで充填された臨界寸前の熱量を、スタジオワークによって自分達の純粋な音楽探求、”ヘヴィロック”の向こう側へと昇華、深く進んでいったのは極自然な成り行きだった。本作に収められたライブは “何者にも縛られず純粋に、ただただ表現と向き合う為のアルバム”『New Album 2009』を制作した正にその時期に行われたもの。新旧の楽曲が、サポートギタリストのMichio Kuriharaと共にツアー/ライブでビルドアップされ、オリジナルの音響から逸脱し変容していった様子を感じてもらえると思う。今思えば、このライブは現在へと続く、スタジオでの実験性とツアー/ライブでの肉体性を両立させ、より自由に往復し楽曲を進化させていくスタイルの原点であるかもしれない。そして2011年の『New Album』『Heavy Rocks』『Attention Please』3作同時リリースへの導線となっている。

『NO World Tour “In Your Head” 2021』

The first installment of Boris’s Bandcamp Archive Season 3 is a live album from the release party for our latest studio album, “NO”. We are releasing the audio from our release party that took place in May of this year as a Bandcamp-limited release in high resolution format.
