The 2nd installment of the Boris Bandcamp Archive Season 5 is a high-resolution digital master of Phenomenons Drive, our vinyl-only release originally out in 2018 on Hello From The Gutter and reissued in 2020 by Dog Knights Productions out of the UK.

In 2017, the year before this was released, Boris celebrated our 25th anniversary as a band, releasing our album “DEAR” in commemoration. We underwent our largest tour ever, making many new encounters with fans and listeners all over the world. At the same time we reunited with old friends, our relationships freshly reinvigorated.
This was a period when our consciousness went even deeper into depths of rock, progressing further in our pursuit of off-the-grid musical expression. Through the course of events, it became inevitable for us to release “Phenomenons Drive” through Hello From The Gutter, a label that we’ve had a close friendship with since the early days of our formation. With its unwavering determination and aesthetics over many years of operation, this label should be called, “The conscience of the Japanese underground scene.” The label’s approach resonates with us, and there are a lot characteristics of that approach that we share.
Hello From The Gutter issued 600 copies in limited clear vinyl format which immediately sold out. In addition to the BPM-dissolving title track, “Phenomenons Drive”, also included is our cover of “Sanpo” by Katsurei, a band we’ve played with who are a hidden treasure of Japanese psychedelic rock. Your consciousness becomes hazy from these songs that seem to lose their way inside a world with no basis of time, and before long perhaps some form of enlightenment will be projected upon your eardrum.

この作品がリリースされた前年の2017年、Borisは結成25周年を迎え、記念アルバムともいうべきアルバム『DEAR』を発表。
過去最大規模のワールドツアーを行い、世界中のファン、リスナーとの新しい出会いを重ねていく。
また、旧知の盟友達とも再会し、その交流も新たに深まっていった。自分たちの意識も、更にロックの深部へと向かい、グリッドレスな音楽表現の探求に進んでいった時期でもあった。
そうした流れの中、結成初期から親交の深い“Hello From The Gutter”から『Phenomenons Drive』をリリースしたのは必然だった。
ブレることない意志と美学を持って長年運営されてきたこのレーベルは「日本アンダーグラウンドシーンの良心」とも言えるべき存在だ。その姿勢には共鳴できるものがあり、自分たちの姿勢と重なる部分も多かった。
Hello From The Gutterからのオリジナルは600枚限定クリア・カラーヴァイナルというフォーマットでリリースされ、即ソールドアウトに。
BPMが完全に溶解するタイトル曲「Phenomenons Drive」に加え、この頃共演もしている日本サイケデリック・ロックの至宝”割礼”のカヴァー「散歩」を収録。時間軸の無い世界の奥へ迷い込むような楽曲群に意識は朦朧とし、やがてあなたの鼓膜には涅槃の風景が映し出されることだろう。

The first installment of Season 5 of the Boris Bandcamp archive is our side of our 2018 split release with The Novembers, “unknown flowers”. This is the first time it is available in high-resolution digital format.

Originally released in 2018 as a joint-release from our own label, Fangsanalsatan, and The Novembers’ label, Merz. In October of 2018 we played a show together where it first became available in limited edition.
Out from our relationship of creatively stimulating each other, this split 12” was a collaboration with the concept, “Let’s each write new songs and cover each other’s songs. However, we won’t reveal which composition is by which band.”
We hope you can stronger feel the sense of values and beauty jointly shared by both bands from the unclear origins of these songs. The striking record cover photograph that seems to shake the very notion and distinction of sky and earth was taken by Yusuke Yamatani, a mutual friend of both bands. This release is now available digitally for the first time.

オリジナルは2018年、自分たちのレーベルfangsanalsatanとTHE NOVEMBERSのレーベルMERZとの共同リリース。
同年10月に行われた彼らとの2マンライブの会場にて先行・限定販売された。
このスプリット12インチは、互いに刺激を受け与え合う関係性の中で「それぞれ新曲を書き下ろし、カヴァーし合う。しかし、どちらがどのバンドの楽曲かは明かさない」というコンセプトのコラボレーション作品。
楽曲の出自が不明である事によって、両者に共有される価値観や美意識がより感じられるだろう。
天地の概念と判別が揺らぐような印象的なジャケット写真は、両バンドに親交のあるYusuke Yamataniによるもの。
今回初めてデジタル解禁される。

結成から30周年を迎えた2022年、記念すべき最新アルバム『Heavy Rocks』を8月12日にリリース。本作を携えた、実に3年ぶりとなる6週間の全米ツアーから帰国後の10月に大阪・東京公演の開催が決定。

From March 2022 Boris resumes archive releases on Bandcamp.

The first installment of the 4th season of the Boris Bandcamp archive is “1985”, which was sold only in limited vinyl format for members of the then-newly established Boris fan club in 2019, “heavy rock party”. Now the album is available digitally for the first time.

BandcampアーカイブSeason4第一弾は、2019年にオープンしたBorisファンクラブ”heavy rock party”のメンバーに向け、限定Vinylのみで販売していた音源『1985』をデジタルで解禁。

“1985” is an original album that remained unreleased for a long time. It was recorded during the same period as our 2011-released “New Album”.

In 2011 we announced 3 separate albums, each layering various trials of what we imagined as “heavy”. With these various expressive styles, it was a time when we expanded the possibilities of our own Heavy Rock. After completing the 3 albums, we made use of methods outside of our usual environment of amplified sound resonating in the room. We experimented with direct recording that made use of MIDI, synth guitar, electric drums, and so on. We remember that clearly.
“1985” is the 4th album of ours that was unreleased.

In 2019 we launched our first official fan club, “heavy rock party”, and “1985” was only sold as a limited edition vinyl release around Christmas time as a present to fan club members. Now it is available for the first time in high-resolution digital format.

This is a work that gave us a sense of having expanded the map of sound, discovering another layer, and opening up an unseen passage that was not known to the outside world. We’d also like you to listen to this electronic inclination that has accumulated in Boris as a connection to our latest album, “W”.

『1985』は2011年にリリースした『New Album』と同時期にレコーディングを行い、長い間未発表となっていたオリジナル・スタジオアルバム。

2011年は3枚のアルバムを発表した年であり、自分たちの思い描く”Heavy”をキーワードに様々な試みをを重ね、その表現方法を更新、Heavy Rockの可能性を拡張していった時期だった。3枚を完成させた後に、MIDI、シンセギター、電子ドラム等を用いながら、空気を介さない音楽実験に取り組んでいた、そんな記憶がある。
『1985』はリリースされなかった４枚目のアルバム。

2019年、初のオフィシャル・ファンクラブ”heavy rock party”が発足し、『1985』はクリスマスに”ファンクラブ・メンバーへのプレゼント”として限定Vinylのみで販売。今回はハイレゾリューション・デジタルフォーマットでの解禁となる。

音の地図を塗り広げ、別の層を発見し、外部には知られない不過視の通路を切り開いた、そんな実感のあった作品。
Borisの中に蓄積されていたエレクトロな指向は最新作『W』への繋がりとしても聴いて欲しい。

両バンドの友人であり、2020年に他界したサウンドエンジニアJohn Hopkinsに捧げられたSplit 7inch.
BongzillaはJohnのレコーディングによる楽曲。Borisは互いが敬愛したバンド”Truth and Janey”の楽曲をカヴァー。
US バージョンとEUROバージョンでは、プレス枚数、ジャケット仕様、ヴァイナルの仕様、カラーが異なる。
